Удивительно, что Мартину Идену никто не давал денег. Ну ладно Рут, ей на самом деле было на него наплевать, да и папенька не одобрит спонсирование троглодита.
Но у него был якобы друг Бессенгер, которому оставалось жить считанные дни, у него не было жены и детей, и Лондон никак не разрешает такое противоречие, что Мартин голодал неделями, в то время как Бессингер вел себя как ублюдок и похуист на 100, время от времени бросая своему другу подачки в виде бесплатных обедов и немного денег, зато регулярно притаскиваясь к нему с бутылкой дорогой выпивки. И для Мартина он оставался близким человеком. Возможно, Лондон так хотел подчеркнуть бескорыстие своего героя.

I like Fragmenter very much. Now I have extra motivation to change. It's a big difference – just write to myself in a paper notebook, or write in order to share my thoughts.
Fragmenter is cool – I start to think once and again why I'm so depressed and how I came to be like that.
